What Is the Difference Between a DC and AC Electric Motor?

When choosing the right motor for your project it can be difficult to know which is the most appropriate for the particular application and industry. The two main initial options are between DC and AC electric motors. But what is the difference between them? And when would one be more suitable than the other? There are five fundamental differences between AC and DC motors;
  1. Power Source – DC motors generally operate on direct current, where the current flows in one direction continuously, whereas AC motors operate on alternating current where the direction of current flow reverses periodically.
  2. Construction – DC motors have a commutator and can be brushed or brushless. The brushes help in the conversion of electrical energy to mechanical energy. AC motors, on the other hand, do not have commutators and brushes and are simpler in construction. They also come in several types, including induction motors and synchronous motors.
  3. Speed Control – DC motors offer straightforward speed control by varying the voltage or current supplied to the motor. This makes them suitable for applications requiring precise speed control. AC motors, however, usually have fixed speeds determined by the frequency of the AC power supply. Speed can be controlled using frequency converters or variable frequency drives (VFDs), which adjust the frequency of the AC power supply to the motor.
  4. Torque – DC motors generally offer high starting torque, making them suitable for applications requiring rapid acceleration or high torque at low speeds, whereas AC induction motors normally have lower starting torque but they can produce a lot of torque once they are up to speed.
  1. Maintenance – Brushed DC motors require periodic maintenance to replace brushes and commutators, which can wear out over time. Brushless DC motors on the other hand, have lower maintenance requirements. AC motors, especially induction motors, have fewer moving parts compared to DC motors and therefore have lower maintenance requirements.
Despite the various differences in the motors’ construction and power sources, one is no ‘better’ than the other, but that is not to say that some applications are better suited for AC or DC motors. Applications best suited for AC motors
  • Industrial Machinery – AC motors are commonly used in industrial machinery such as pumps, compressors, fans, and conveyor systems. This is because they are robust, reliable, and able to operate continuously under varying load conditions.
  • Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning Systems – HVAC systems often use AC motors for the fans and compressors due to the ability to provide efficient and reliable operation over extended periods.
  • Household Appliances – Many household appliances like washing machines, refrigerators, and air conditioners are powered by AC motors for their simplicity, reliability, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Water Pumps – AC motors are commonly employed in water pumps for agricultural, commercial, and residential applications due to their ability to provide continuous operation and variable speed control.
  • Electrical Generators – AC generators, also known as alternators, are widely used in various applications, including power plants, vehicles, and portable generators.
  • Cooking Appliances – AC motors are used in a whole range of cooking appliances within the commercial sector, including ovens, griddle & grills and fryers.
Applications best suited for DC motors
  • Powered Wheelchairs and Accessibility – DC motors are often used to power electric wheelchairs, lifts, patient hoists and ramps due to their high starting torque, precise speed control, and efficiency over a wide range of speeds.
  • Robotics – DC motors, especially brushless motors, are commonly used in robotic applications due to their high torque-to-weight ratio, precise speed control, and compact size.
  • Industrial Automation – DC motors are used specifically in solar panel and turbine tracking, vending machines and printing equipment.
  • Medical Devices – DC motors find applications in medical devices such as infusion pumps, surgical instruments, and prosthetic limbs due to their precise control, compact size, and low-noise operation.
  • Transport and Logistics – DC motors are fundamental in the transport and logistics industries being used to power rail and marine wiper systems, caravan movers and tarp pullers. They are used for their precise control, reliability, and compactness.
