What Is A Worm Wheel Gearbox?

At Parvalux, we offer several different gearboxes in standard and custom variations. A worm wheel gear is one of the most common types of gear and you will find worm wheel gearboxes in applications across the world. There are benefits and disadvantages of using a worm wheel gear in an electric motor gearbox and it lends itself better to certain industries.

About worm wheel gearboxes

Worm wheel gearboxes are used alongside electric motors to change the torque or output speed and use a traditional type of gear with a toothed wheel. The two sections that give this type of gear its name are the wheel – the bit that is most recognised in gears – and the ‘worm’, which is a shaft with a spiral section that engages the wheel during use. These types of gear work when an electric motor applies rotational energy to the worm, this then circulates against the wheel and is pushed via the teeth. This then rotates the load. Gearboxes can come in a right angle or inline orientation and the type of gear used in these depends on the application requirements.

This type of electric motor gearbox can be built from a variety of materials, but it still poses the problem of lubrication. The sliding motion of worm wheel gears means that lubricant is wiped away faster. However, when you are choosing your gearbox, we are happy to discuss options with you to make it as efficient as possible.

Where are worm wheel gearboxes used?

You will find worm wheel gears in AC and DC motor gearboxes across the globe because they are one of the most common styles of gear. A benefit of worm wheel gearboxes is that they stop quickly, meaning they are perfect for applications such as conveyor systems. They also tend to work in a singular direction and lock up when the motion stops, meaning that your conveyor remains motionless when not in use.

Worm wheel gears are also found in electric motor gearboxes that are used in the building automation industry, particularly automatic doors. Again, this is because of their hard stop mechanism. The versatility of worm wheel gearboxes means that you can use them across industries, including materials handling, making them an important feature of motor and gearbox design, regardless of your requirements.

Custom electric motor gearboxes

There are several reasons that you might choose a worm wheel gearbox. One of these reasons is that worm wheel gears are typically very quiet, which makes them ideal for use in public places. The other major reason is that they are very compact in design and work well in space-limited applications. Parvalux electric motor gearboxes can be built to any size and specification, to accommodate your industry needs. Just give us a call to discuss gearbox options.
