How VE Day shaped the modern world

On a national level VE Day was more than just the end of the War, a moment of celebration and the beginning of rebuilding European society. The end of the War also saw the creation of the United Nations, advancements in medicine and technology and a rise in democracy across all European nations. Additionally, Mark also feels that “lessons from WWII, marked by VE Day, still influence how militaries train and prepare. The emphasis on readiness, logistics, and coalition warfare stems directly from WWII strategies.”

Resilience, Unity and Sacrifice

Even in the complex, and often divided modern world, Mark believes the spirit of the Blitz that helped people reach VE Day is still present in society, albeit manifesting in different ways. He said:

“Resilience is still very present. We see it all the time, especially in moments of crisis. Think about how people rallied during the COVID-19 pandemic—healthcare workers, key workers, and communities stepped up in ways that echoed wartime perseverance. Or how nations respond to disasters like earthquakes, floods, or even wars in places like Ukraine.

After tragedies or global challenges, people often put aside differences to work in unity. You can see it in how countries send aid, how communities come together, or how shared causes like climate change spark international cooperation.”

Celebrating VE Day

Across the UK and Europe parades and events have been organised starting on Monday 5 May and continuing until 10 May.

On VE Day itself (8 May) the Poole branch of the Royal British Legion are presenting a wreath at the War Memorial in Poole Park, and there will be a beacon lighting ceremony in front of the BCP Council Civic Centre in Bournemouth. On the evening of 10 May Winton and Moordown Royal British Legion will also be holding an event with live entertainment and a chance to embrace the joy of 1945. Mark will be out on exercise on Okehampton Camp working with the regular army on a regional event called Ten Tors (ExWyvernTor) but claims he will “be having a toast to all the service personnel who fought for our freedom.”

This week, 10th-16th February, is National Apprenticeship week in the UK. This celebration of apprenticeships and the acknowledgement of the amazing skills that can be learned for life, is now in its eighteenth year.

Apprenticeships are no longer only the domain of school leavers starting out on a new career, but can also be a fantastic opportunity for employees looking to progress in their career or even kick start a new career path.

Here at Parvalux we have 13 current apprentices and are proud to be contributing to the future workforce, by providing them with new skills they can carry forward.

In 2024 Parvalux was heavily involved in the community from raising money for charity to being involved in schools. Parvalux has been working with the local community all year round to provide resources to people who need it.

Parvalux Charity of The Year!

The Parvalux Charity of the year was SPRING, a fantastic charity who helped parents and family members who had experienced baby loss. In 2024 we decided to do something different and registered for a charity skydive through SPRING. We sold tickets for a raffle to who would be jumping out of the plane and taking on the responsibility of raising funds for the skydive. Harry Thompson our Digital Marketing Executive won the raffle and started planning events and activities to raise money for SPRING.

The fund-raising journey started with a bake sale where our star bakers managed to raise £81 and got us well on our journey to reaching our £600 target. The second activity organised was a pool tournament where 32 members of staff competed. This was a fantastic competition that brought all areas of Parvalux together. We were able to raise £70 from the tournament and the winner Jamie Manns kindly donated his winnings of £30 to SPRING. The next fundraising activity was a raffle, Harry contacted local businesses to round up attractive prizes that would encourage the Parvalux staff to buy tickets. Things like extra holiday, vouchers and gym passes were up for grabs and caught the attention of staff. We ended up selling over 500 tickets and absolutely smashing the fund-raising target. All together Harry managed to raise £1,053 for SPRING and his skydive was a day before his 25th birthday on October the 5th.
