Case Sealing Within Packaging Automation

The whole point of automation is to speed up all aspects of the packaging process ensuring products are out of the warehouse in the shortest time possible.   The process has many key stages, including the case sealing process.

What is Case Sealing?

In a nutshell case sealing within the packaging automation process is the closing and sealing of cardboard cartons after they have been filled, in preparation for storage, shipping or distribution.   By removing the manual task of sealing with a tape or glue gun, the process is quicker, has more consistent quality, reduces waste and makes production lines more efficient. This can ultimately end up being a cost-effective option.   The main actions performed by a case sealer are;
  • Squaring and aligning the case so it passes through the machine at a consistent angle.
  • Folding the top flaps over so they are in alignment every time.
  • Sealing the case with tape or hot-melt glue.
  • Moving the sealed case along the conveyor belt for the next stage of the process.
The efficiency and reliability of the case sealing process is dependent on the most suitable motors to run the flap folders, tape heads, and conveyors. Each of these elements demands precise, continuous movement to maintain throughput whilst at the same time minimising downtime. This is where Parvalux can help.

Parvalux Motors

Here at Parvalux our engineers have decades of experience in designing and building motors which fit the needs of precision projects, such as those within the automated packaging process. We understand the challenges faced and therefore design our motors with this in mind. These challenges include;
  • Quiet Operation – Our low-noise motors reduce workplace disruption and create a safer, more comfortable environment.
  • Efficient Power Delivery – Optimising performance ensures energy savings without compromising on speed or torque.
  • Reliability and Durability – Our motors are built for various duty cycles including continuous operation, as well as minimising downtime and reducing maintenance requirements.
  • Compact Design – Our space-efficient motors enable sleeker machine footprints and easier equipment integration.
  • Easy Integration – Our flexible mounting options and customizable solutions simplify the design process.

Choosing the Right Motor

Different aspects of the case sealing process require different motor specifications as one size does not fit all.   AC Induction Motors  AC induction motors are a great choice for flap folders and conveyors as they provide simple continuous motion, are rugged and durable, have minimal maintenance requirements, and can be a cost-effective option.  These motors however require extra control systems to provide more precise speed, and at lower speeds they can have a reduction in efficiency.     Brushed DC Motors  These are ideal for tape heads where variable speed control and torque are required. Brushed DC motors provide good torque at low speeds, have easy speed control and are compact and cost effective.  The biggest challenge with brushed DC motors is that the brushes wear out which can require more maintenance resulting in a shorter life span. They are also not as quiet running as other options. However the majority of our PMDC motors have replaceable brushes if this becomes a requirement.  Brushless DC (BLDC) Motors  These are well-suited for flap folders and tape heads where quiet, smooth, continuous operation is required. As there are no brushes they have a longer service life than the brushed motor, and have a compact design with an excellent power-to-weight ratio. They are also able to offer precise control over speed and torque.   BLDC motors can have a more expensive initial start-up cost, and can require more complex control electronics than other motor types.
Partnering with Parvalux  If you are in the process of automating your packaging line or are upgrading your case sealing process, the team at Parvalux are here to help.
