Vehicle access systems are critical for people with mobility issues to gain their independence, but their safety and reliability must be guaranteed. When designing products within these spaces, the challenge lies not only in creating smooth, intuitive user experiences, but in specifying components that can withstand repeated use, heavy loads, and demanding environments.
At the heart of these systems are geared motors which at Parvalux are engineered to provide controlled torque, precise motion, and long-term durability across a full range of vehicle access applications which include wheelchair lifts, step actuators, and car boot hoists.
The team of engineers at Parvalux have decades of experience in manufacturing geared motors which combine technical expertise with application-specific motor design.
Vehicle Access Expectations
Across the Vehicle Access industry, there are several expectations which are applicable for wheelchair lifts, step actuators, and boot hoists. All three applications require:
High torque at low speed – As all these applications involve lifting or manoeuvring under load, they need to be able to overcome static friction and load inertia through a high starting torque.
Controlled, predictable motion – There should be controlled acceleration and deceleration, with no jerky start/stop motions alongside maintaining a consistent speed regardless of the load.
High shock and load tolerance – The real-world environments these applications will be expected to work in will include road vibrations, kerbs and other uneven surfaces, as well as variable weight distribution. Therefore, the geared motor must be able to handle this unpredictability as well as maintaining smooth operation with repeated start/stop cycles and unpredictable shock loads.
Compact size envelope and integration flexibility – The housing for the geared motor needs to be compact as it is often positioned in underfloor or side-entry housing. As well as being small the geared motors should have flexible mounting options, customisable shaft outputs, and adaptable electrical components to ensure easy integration.
Environmental protection – As these applications are exposed to water spray, road salt and dust as well as variations in temperature it is important they have the appropriate IP rating and are manufactured with corrosion-resistant materials.
Low noise – Smooth running and low noise go hand in hand, as noise and vibrations can severely affect the user experience and their perception of device safety.
Customisation capability – Even if the general requirements are similar, load capacities and mechanical architecture can vary from application to application. Therefore, the possibility of customisation in regard to variable gear ratios, different voltages, and custom shafts and housings can make your solution far more efficient than an off-the-shelf option.
In all vehicle access systems, the selection of the right geared motor is fundamental for all the expected reasons: safety compliance, user experience, system longevity, reduced warranty claims, and brand reputation.
