Safe Transfers Every Time: Geared Motors for Patient Hoists

The patient handling industry is essential for providing mobility, independence and dignity to the end user. However, there are a number of considerations when manufacturing within this space, with the most important being reliability and safety.

To ensure patient hoists are reliable and safe with every use, integrating the right combination of electric motor and gearbox is key, as this can have a major impact on safety, user confidence and comfort as well as regulatory compliance.

The most suited geared motor must display precision control, repeatable performance, inbuilt protection mechanisms and durability. This is where Parvalux can help. With our decades of experience, we pride ourselves on delivering the reliability, consistency and safety critical to successful patient hoist applications.

Patient Hoist Requirements

With patient hoists, as well as the wider patient lifting systems industry, safety isn’t only about preventing catastrophic failures, but also the daily perception of safety created by consistent, predictable behaviour in every transfer. This perceived safety can be almost as important as mechanical safety for customer satisfaction. This means the patient hoist should offer:

Controlled Motion

The movement of a patient hoist needs to be predictable and therefore controlled. The motor needs to be able to offer gradual and smooth acceleration and deceleration, as well as reduced mechanical shock loading.

Integrated Protection Strategies

Another essential requirement of geared motors for patient hoists are integrated protection strategies. These can help to prevent overheating during extended duty cycles, as well as protecting internal components from premature degradation.

Not only can this extend the life of the motor but it can also ensure they continue to operate safely throughout the life-cycle of the motor components.

Improved User Experience

User experience is an important element of patient mobility solutions, as not only must the equipment be able to move the patient safely and effectively but should also be comfortable, have perceived safety and be dignified.

One way to ensure this, is to use geared motors which are smooth running but with minimum noise and vibrations in addition to reduced abrupt stop/start transitions.

Low noise is particularly important within a hospital environment as noise does not only disturb the user but others in close proximity.

Robust Duty Cycle Performance

Whereas some patient hoists are used intermittently (within a residential environment for example) others within a clinical setting may have repetitive and long-term duty cycles.

Whilst each lift itself can be brief, the cumulative usage across care environments can be substantial and it is vital to have a motor that is able to perform consistently no matter how arduous the duty cycle is.

The motor used within the patient handling industry therefore, needs to provide a high cycle life with reduced maintenance intervals, as well as gear tooth durability under repeated, heavy load and a stable lubrication performance.

Ups and Downs of Patient Hoists: Precision Power for Patient Mobility

Mobility systems within the healthcare industry can be a vital tool, with patient hoists enabling safe, efficient, and dignified mobility for patients with limited movement. They are essential for bedside transfers and bathroom assistance, and must combine reliability, precision, and adaptability. Central to achieving this is through choosing the most suitable electric motors to power the appliances.

The Role of Patient Hoists in Healthcare

The value of patient hoists is twofold, as they not only reduce physical strain on caregivers but at the same time improve patient comfort and safety. Being widely used in varying settings hoists are available in different configurations, manual, battery-powered, or fully electric, with applications ranging from home care to hospital wards.

Understanding the mechanics behind these systems is essential for the designing process with key considerations including lifting speed, torque, reliability, and the ability to integrate seamlessly with the hoist’s mechanical structure.

Requirements for a Geared Electric Motor

Electric motors used to power patient hoists must be able to balance safety, smooth motion, and reliability under varying loads as well as juggle regulatory compliance and end user comfort. In order to achieve this there are a number of factors to be taken into account which include:

Torque Requirements – Patient hoists require a high starting torque in order to lift a static load smoothly, as well as consistent torque across the lift cycle. Bariatric hoists also need to be able to handle overload conditions without effecting performance. Therefore motors need to accommodate a number of specific requirements:

Gear reduction is essential (spur or planetary gearboxes)
Motors must tolerate short-duration peak loads without overheating
Torque ripple must be minimal to avoid jerky motion

Speed Requirements – Patient hoists in general require slow and predictable speed, although there are some exceptions. For example ceiling hoists run a little faster than other types due to having longer travel paths. The smooth, slow operating speed ensures patient comfort and security, a reduced pendulum effect whilst lifting in addition to regulatory compliance.

Therefore when choosing a motor it is essential to consider:

Ability to deliberately reduce motor speed via gearing
Electronic control to enable soft start/stop cycles
Speed is able to remain stable across load variations

Duty Cycle Requirements – Unlike some applications patient hoists are intermittently used. However, even if used intermittently they still need to be reliable every time. As overheating under such a duty cycle is common, the motor needs to offer:

An efficient winding design to reduce heat build-up
An adequate thermal margin for repeated short lifts
Compatibility with temperature protection (PTC or thermal cut-out)

Quiet Operation – Patient hoists operate in close proximity to people and therefore need to have:

Low vibrations
Quiet operation (especially for ceiling hoists)
Minimal cogging torque

Failing on these basic requirements can make for a very unpleasant experience for both the end user and the hoist operator.

Safety Compliance – When dealing with patient mobility, safety is non-negotiable and is the number one feature of all appliances. The motors used to power the hoists therefore need:

Self-locking or brake-assisted gear systems
Controlled descent in power-loss scenarios
Compatibility with mechanical or electromagnetic brakes
An ability to integrate with overload protection

Efficient Power Delivery: How Parvalux Geared Motors Extend Battery Life

In a powered wheelchair, battery performance is one of the most critical factors influencing user experience and safety perception.

Users expect a suitable range on a single charge, as well as reliable and consistent performance throughout the entire discharge cycle.

Meeting these expectations are dependent on the geared motor, and how efficiently electrical energy is converted into motion.

User Expectation

Users have certain real-world expectations from their powered wheelchair, and anything less will affect perceptions of safety and usability. These include:

Low-speed manoeuvring

Incline climbing

Stop-start urban use

Continuous operation over extended periods

At Parvalux we take these expectations seriously and ensure our geared motors:

Match motor characteristics to load profiles

Minimise current draw during peak demand

Ensure smooth torque delivery to avoid energy spikes

The Importance of Efficiency

Within a standard powered wheelchair there are numerous energy constraints that can lead to electrical, mechanical or control-related inefficiencies, reducing range significantly. Particular challenges include:

Limited on-board battery capacity

Variable terrain and load conditions

Frequent start-stop operation

Smooth, precise control

In order to maximise efficiency, it’s essential to limit how much energy is wasted through excessive heat, noise or mechanical resistance. Reducing these features increases how much energy is converted into useful motion.

Whilst the electric motor is vital, a poorly optimised gearbox can also cause various challenges including excessive heat and friction, reduced torque transfer and increased energy consumption resulting in a less efficient geared motor.

Here at Parvalux, we address these challenges head on, and our precision engineered gearboxes ensure that torque is transmitted with minimal loss resulting in a more efficient powered motor.

Electric Motors in Patient Handling Applications

At the centre of patient handling equipment is the electric motor technology that drives it. Whether focusing on stairlifts to navigate staircases, powered wheelchairs, or patient hoists to transfer patients, the geared motor directly influences the useability, the safety, and the long-term reliability of the application.

Therefore, due to their fundamental role, choosing the right geared electric motor requires a clear understanding of how different applications place unique demands on torque, control, duty cycle, and integration. Getting this right at the start of the design process can ensure that the final product will be safe, comfortable and energy efficient.

With our decades of experience within the industry, Parvalux are here to help you through this decision-making process with our application-specific solutions which deliver the safety and the performance expected from your geared-motor.

The Role of Geared Motors

So, what are the motors required to do within patient handling applications?

Essentially their role is to provide a safe, controlled motion under load, within a compact design, with minimum noise and vibration. The geared motor is essential for the sufficient operation of the application because they:

Convert high-speed motor output into usable low-speed, high-torque motion.
Enable precise control for smooth starts, stops, and positioning.
Support compact system design without compromising performance.
Deliver energy efficiency and durability across repeated duty cycles.

However, ensuring these requirements are met, whilst also addressing application-sensitive specifications, and therefore solutions, necessitates a further understanding of the geared motors themselves.

International Women in Engineering Day 2026

On 23rd June 2026 we celebrate International Women in Engineering Day. This day is an opportunity to recognise the talented women whose skills, knowledge and dedication help drive our business forward every day.

From production and assembly to inspection, coordination and training, women across our organisation play a vital role in ensuring quality, safety and innovation remain at the heart of what we do which is why we celebrate them every day.

As an example, in the last 4 years, the number of women working in our Engineering team has quadrupled. There is still a lot of work to do to create an even playing field but we are well on the way, and believe we offer a safe and inspiring environment for women entering this industry.

Contributions to the team

The female members of the team all bring different skills and talents, outside of their job descriptions making Parvalux a rich and vibrant place to work.

Anna Kucharska, Sub Assembly NDE Operator believes her strength on the team is to use her “skills and knowledge to make good decisions, solve problems, and ensure the work is done safely and correctly every day”. Kirsty Harding, Inspection Co-Ordinator, expands on this by adding that it is important to “use technical knowledge, inspection data, and practical judgment to ensure equipment, assets, or projects remain safe, compliant, and efficient.”

At Parvalux we pride ourselves on our safety, quality and durability of our workplace and the products we manufacture, and the women on the team hold this at the core of their work. Pat Harris, Operator, for example, believes that “making sure every stage of the build is correct, makes the job easier for everyone,” which will ultimately build a strong team. Whereas Sunee Bowns, Machine Setter, emphasises the importance of being in tune with the product lines, and being able to react quickly and efficiently to changes on the production line, even if that means stopping the process and reporting and escalating the issues as necessary.

It is precisely this care for quality and attention to detail that we value in all of our staff here at Parvalux.

Entering a male dominated industry

As much as the industry is now fully available to women it can still raise challenges when first entering the workplace and this can result in some steep learning curves. Kirsty remembers when she started that:

“The steepest learning curve when I first moved into the role was learning how to manage multiple inspections simultaneously while ensuring all documentation, compliance requirements and communications were correct and up to date.

What helped me get through it was developing organizational daily habits and leaning on my colleagues for their knowledge and experiences.”

Pat agrees that her colleagues were invaluable in those first days: “I came from a very different environment. I worked in food production and then goods-in in a warehouse, so this was totally different. What got me through was supportive and organised colleagues.”

Anna and Sunee believed the steepest learning curve was the role and the processes themselves with Anna stating: “The hardest part was learning the assembly process, work instructions, and different components of the NDE unit. I improved by asking questions, practicing every day, and learning from experienced team members.” Sunee adds that her own sheer determination to learn the role and to carry it out efficiently was her key to success.

Parvalux Basics: Duty Cycle Guide

When specifying an electric motor, a grasp of the fundamentals of duty cycles is critical. If not understood or ignored altogether, there can be problems of over or under specification of the design, which can lead to inefficiencies or premature motor failure.

The Parvalux team take duty cycles seriously and want our clients to fully understand their importance.
Duty Cycle Basics
A duty cycle refers to how an electric motor operates over time, in relation to running and rest time as well as load conditions during operation. Being aware of this relationship is critical in determining whether a motor will operate reliably over its intended lifespan.

One challenge with electric motors is that they all generate heat during operation, and if this isn’t managed it can lead to system failure, insulation breakdown, reduced efficiency and ultimately a significantly shortened motor life span. However, correctly identifying duty cycles can enable engineers to:

Select the right motor size and specification
Avoid unnecessary over sizing (which will also save cost and space)
Ensure consistent, reliable performance
Improve overall system efficiency

Duty Cycle Types
There are ten international standards for duty cycle types labelled using IEC classification S1-S10. The most common are:

Continuous Running Duty (S1) – This is when the motor runs at a constant load for long enough to reach thermal equilibrium. However, a continuous cycle can maintain a consistent temperature once it has stabilised and can function without the need for significant rest periods.

This cycle is common in conveyor systems, fans and pumps or mobility applications where continuous operation is standard.

Any motors being used for a continuous duty cycle must be able to dissipate heat continuously without overheating.

Short-Time Duty (S2) – This cycle is when the motor operates for a short, specified period (e.g. 10, 20 or 60 minutes) and then rests long enough for full cooling before starting up again. This type of duty cycle is common in actuators, adjustment mechanisms or systems with infrequent use.

Motors for short-time cycles can be smaller than those used for continuous duty as they are not required to manage a continuous thermal load.

Intermittent Periodic Duty (S3) – These are a sequence of identical cycles (repeated start/stop cycles), which include a period of activity and a period of rest without reaching full thermal equilibrium. It is important to calculate accurately to prevent overheating through repeated use. These are typically associated with patient hoists, lifting systems, or mobility devices with frequent starts and stops.

Intermittent Periodic Duty with Starting (S4) – This is similar to the Intermittent Periodic Duty Cycle (S3), however it also considers the additional thermal and mechanical stress of repeatedly starting the motor.

This can be a key element of powered wheelchairs, stairlifts or other systems with frequent acceleration and deceleration. With this type of duty cycle, the starting torque and current must be carefully considered as they can affect the motor sizing and thermal performance.

For more information on duty cycles download our Duty Cycle Guide here.

World Environment Day 2026

Friday the 5th of June is World Environment Day, which we felt was an ideal opportunity to look back at what we have achieved at Parvalux in the past year, in our journey towards a greener future.

The theme for this year’s World Environment Day is Climate Action, which emphasises that now is the time for action and for positive contributions towards tackling the problem of climate change.

This means it is time to accept the current climate situation and be proactive in doing whatever we can as individuals and as corporations to “step in, to move further, to steer a world already in motion.”[1]

Here at Parvalux, we have heard the cry and are proud of what we have achieved in the past twelve months to improve the environmental impact of our operations here in Poole, UK. We know there is more work to do but every step should be celebrated.

Taking Climate Action

ISO 14001 Certification

At the end of May 2025, Parvalux achieved Environmental Management System ISO 14001 Certification and have maintained the standard for the past year.

Achieving this standard will have a major environmental impact on our business through a number of aspects of the manufacturing process from metal machining, coatings and paint, transportation, waste streams, and supply chain activities.

The ISO 14001 certification demonstrates how we are actively working towards managing and improving the environmental impact our operations have.

The certification requires a number of actions including monitoring electricity usage, setting waste reduction targets, land-fill reduction targets with an increase in recycling, improving efficiency, as well as further consideration of renewable energy. Our new HQ in Poole has 1,500 solar panels so we are already committed to this and are looking for ways to improve.

The EMS certification also requires improved management of toxic chemicals including safe storage, spill prevention, environmental assessments, and safe disposal.

Achieving this certification, not only improves our business credentials and makes us more competitive as well as lowering our operating costs but more importantly it will reduce our carbon footprint in the long run and demonstrates our ethical waste management and manufacturing processes.

Waste Reduction

As part of our ISO 14001 certification, we set a target to reduce our general waste by 10% on last years’ figure (2024).

However, the team at Parvalux really embraced the challenge, and we have reduced our waste by 13%. In 2024 we produced 25.3 tonnes of waste which we reduced to 22.1 tonnes in 2025.

There is still work to be done but this is a sterling job, and we are really proud of the team for making this change.

Energy Consumption Reduction

We also set the target of reducing our energy consumption by 10% on last years’ (2024) figure. To achieve this, we set a KPI of kWh / Top Level produced.

In the year 2025, we have had a mixed result. We have consumed 7% less energy which is a little lower than our goal of 10% but conversely, we used 10% more energy per Top Level. There is clearly more work to do to reach this goal, but a 7% reduction in energy consumption shows we are on the right track.

Engineering Reliability

How Parvalux can keep your production line running smoothly
In any high-volume automated packaging space, reliability isn’t a luxury – it’s a necessity. For every minute of machinery downtime, for whatever reason, there is a cost; this can be money, productivity, consistency, company reputation and ultimately customer confidence.

Reliability does not come from fancy marketing campaigns and business strategies. It can be found within the foundational basics – motor solutions. If the electric motors driving your equipment are unreliable everything else will be inefficient resulting in downtime and financial and reputational damage. That is why design engineers across the world rely on Parvalux, as we pride ourselves on electric motor solutions which deliver precision, endurance, and efficiency. Every time.

Parvalux Basics: Torque, Speed, Power, Voltage

Geared Motor Basics: Torque, Speed, Power and Voltage Explained
When choosing an electric motor as well as a gearbox, you’ll be asked to decide on a number of technical specifications – the most important of which are torque, speed, power and voltage. These form the fundamentals of your motor and how well it will operate, but what do these terms actually mean and how do they affect motor performance for your specific application?

To answer, let’s go back to the basics.

Torque in essence is the measure of rotational force that causes the motor shaft to rotate. This rotation is measured in Newton-meters (Nm) and can be thought of as how much ‘turning strength’ a motor or gearbox can deliver.

High-torque geared motors are ideal for applications that require strong rotational force at low speeds, such as lifting mechanisms and conveyors with heavy, constant loads.

Conversely, low-torque motors with high speed are best suited for fans or pumps where continuous, lighter loads are common.

The relationship between torque and speed is inverse. As one increases, the other usually decreases. Efficient operation is dependent on finding the right balance between torque and speed.

On-Demand Packaging

In today’s fast-paced supply chain, manufacturers and distributors need packaging solutions that are as adaptable as the products they protect.

On-demand packaging delivers just that – making it possible to create custom-sized boxes instantly to fit each order. Not only does this eliminate wasted space and excess materials, but can also reduce shipping costs through the reduction of packaging.

However, no on-demand packaging process would work without reliable, precision motors to drive the conveyors, rollers, cutting blades, sealing and folding mechanisms.

Packaging Automation – Automated Shrink Wrapping

Shrink wrapping has a critical part to play in the packaging process – whether automated or manual – across a variety of applications, from food and consumables to pharmaceuticals, electronics and printed materials.

Shrink wrapping not only ensures products are presentation-ready but can also keep them secure for transportation and display, as well as being hygienically clean.

Shrink Wrapping in Distribution

Shrink wrapping is a widely used packaging method where a polymer film is applied and then heated to form a tight, protective layer around the product. It provides a fast, uniform, and efficient way to protect goods while reducing packaging waste.

Reliable Motor Solutions for Continuous Operation

To keep up with the high volumes of modern distribution centres, shrink wrapping lines need motors that deliver consistent performance with minimal downtime. AC and BLDC motors are predominantly used within these systems for continuous high-speed operation ensuring downtime is kept to a minimum but the option for PMDC motors can be used on mobile systems using lower voltage battery systems.

The Difference between Brushed and Brushless in Automated Packaging

Brushed vs Brushless in Automated Packaging
Packaging automation can be a total gamechanger for any distribution centre, as it not only streamlines the process, but can save money, improve throughput, reduce waste and be more time and energy efficient.

However, when it comes to packaging automation machinery, motors are the driving force behind performance, reliability, and efficiency and therefore choosing the right model is a pivotal point of the process.

This starts with the choice of whether to use brushed or brushless motors. As each has its own advantages, limitations, and ideal applications the right choice is dependent on the project and its requirements.

Driving Packaging Automation Forward with Parvalux Motors

Automated packaging systems have become a central element of fast-paced manufacturing environments. With a growing consumer appetite for faster throughput, reduced waste, and reliable uptime, automated packaging systems help companies to scale operations whilst at the same time reducing costs and maintaining consistent quality.

In the same way that automated packaging is central to manufacturing, electric motors are the lynchpin of the automated packaging systems. It is through choosing the right motor that the systems operate reliably and precisely, even under continuous operation.
What is Packaging Automation?
Packaging automation is the use of machines and systems to perform a variety of packaging tasks such as forming, filling, sealing, labelling, and palletising, all without direct human intervention.

Introducing such a packaging process not only enhances productivity, but also reduces human error and labour, the possibility of injuries such as repetitive strain injury (RSI), reduces waste, and improves overall quality. All of these benefits can result in a more cost-effective warehouse, and better profit margins over the lifespan of the machinery.

It is not essential to automate the entire process as it may only be suitable to automate the most time and labour intensive tasks or those where bottle-necks build. Automating these troublesome areas first can lead to greater efficiency and productivity, which could lead to business growth. This step-by-step approach to automation ensures your warehousing scales at the same rate as your business.

Case Sealing Within Packaging Automation

The whole point of automation is to speed up all aspects of the packaging process, ensuring products are out of the warehouse in the shortest time possible.

The process has many key stages, including the case sealing process. Effective case sealing not only secures products for transit but also supports high-volume throughput, reduces labour requirements and improves packaging accuracy. Having a reliable powertrain ensures this process can operate for longer periods without downtime for maintenance.

What is Case Sealing?
In a nutshell case sealing within the packaging automation process is the closing and sealing of cardboard cartons after they have been filled, in preparation for storage, shipping or distribution.

By removing the manual task of sealing with a tape or glue gun, the process is quicker, has more consistent quality, reduces waste and makes production lines more efficient. This can ultimately end up being a cost-effective option.

The main actions performed by a case sealer are;

Squaring and aligning the case so it passes through the machine at a consistent angle.

Folding the top flaps over so they are in alignment every time.

Sealing the case with tape or hot-melt glue.

Moving the sealed case along the conveyor belt for the next stage of the process.

The efficiency and reliability of the case sealing process is dependent on the most suitable motors to run the flap folders, tape heads, and conveyors. Each of these elements demands precise, continuous movement to maintain throughput whilst at the same time minimising downtime. This is where Parvalux can help.
Parvalux Motors
Here at Parvalux our engineers have decades of experience in designing and building motors which fit the needs of precision projects, such as those within the automated packaging process. We understand the challenges faced and therefore design our motors with this in mind. These challenges include;

Quiet Operation – Our low-noise motors reduce workplace disruption and create a safer, more comfortable environment.

Efficient Power Delivery – Optimising performance ensures energy savings without compromising on speed or torque.

Reliability and Durability – Our motors are built for various duty cycles including continuous operation, as well as minimising downtime and reducing maintenance requirements.
Compact Design – Our space-efficient motors enable sleeker machine footprints and easier equipment integration.
Easy Integration – Our flexible mounting options and customisable solutions simplify the design process.

Packaging Automation – Void Filling Machines

Packaging automation plays a crucial role in the protection of goods during transit – from pharmaceuticals, to consumables to electronic components. Void filling machines are key to the packaging automation process as not only do they cushion fragile items or stabilise loads but they can also help to reduce packaging waste.

As demand for faster, smarter and more space-efficient systems expands so too does the need for high-performance motor solutions which can keep up, ensuring your business is ahead of the competition.

How VE Day shaped the modern world

On a national level VE Day was more than just the end of the War, a moment of celebration and the beginning of rebuilding European society. The end of the War also saw the creation of the United Nations, advancements in medicine and technology and a rise in democracy across all European nations. Additionally, Mark also feels that “lessons from WWII, marked by VE Day, still influence how militaries train and prepare. The emphasis on readiness, logistics, and coalition warfare stems directly from WWII strategies.”

Resilience, Unity and Sacrifice

Even in the complex, and often divided modern world, Mark believes the spirit of the Blitz that helped people reach VE Day is still present in society, albeit manifesting in different ways. He said:

“Resilience is still very present. We see it all the time, especially in moments of crisis. Think about how people rallied during the COVID-19 pandemic—healthcare workers, key workers, and communities stepped up in ways that echoed wartime perseverance. Or how nations respond to disasters like earthquakes, floods, or even wars in places like Ukraine.

After tragedies or global challenges, people often put aside differences to work in unity. You can see it in how countries send aid, how communities come together, or how shared causes like climate change spark international cooperation.”

Celebrating VE Day

Across the UK and Europe parades and events have been organised starting on Monday 5 May and continuing until 10 May.

On VE Day itself (8 May) the Poole branch of the Royal British Legion are presenting a wreath at the War Memorial in Poole Park, and there will be a beacon lighting ceremony in front of the BCP Council Civic Centre in Bournemouth. On the evening of 10 May Winton and Moordown Royal British Legion will also be holding an event with live entertainment and a chance to embrace the joy of 1945. Mark will be out on exercise on Okehampton Camp working with the regular army on a regional event called Ten Tors (ExWyvernTor) but claims he will “be having a toast to all the service personnel who fought for our freedom.”

Electric Motors – Understanding the Basics

Electric motors can be found at the heart of a great deal of modern technology, powering everything from household appliances like electric toothbrushes and fridges to industrial conveyor belts and automatic doors. But for many, this vital piece of technology goes unnoticed and unappreciated despite our complete dependency on it.

How do electric motors work?

In essence an electric motor converts electrical energy into mechanical energy, making it possible for a variety of devices and systems to function. To break it down further electric motors require three elements:

Electrical Input — An electric current flows through a wire coil inside the motor, generating a magnetic field.
Magnetic Interaction —The magnetic field interacts with permanent magnets (or other electromagnets) in the motor, causing the rotor (a rotating component) to move.
Mechanical Output — As the rotor turns, it generates rotational force or torque, which can be used to power anything from conveyor belts to kebab skewers.

The benefits of this process is that it is very efficient and can be carefully controlled making electrical motors ideal for both small appliances and large-scale applications.

The most fundamental elements of electric motors are speed and torque, which determine how a motor performs in various applications.

Torque is a measure of the rotational force that an electric motor generates, and is the force required to drive the load. High torque is vital for applications which require heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling, and the higher the torque the heavier the load it can manage.

Torque is paired with speed. The speed refers to how fast the motor’s rotor spins and determines how fast the mechanical output is delivered.

The right combination of torque and speed makes electric motors incredibly versatile as some applications require high torque and low speeds or vice versa. Torque and speed can be carefully controlled according to the application requirements.

Parvalux In The Community 2024

In 2024 Parvalux was heavily involved in the community from raising money for charity to being involved in schools. Parvalux has been working with the local community all year round to provide resources to people who need it.

Parvalux Charity of The Year!

The Parvalux Charity of the year was SPRING, a fantastic charity who helped parents and family members who had experienced baby loss. In 2024 we decided to do something different and registered for a charity skydive through SPRING. We sold tickets for a raffle to who would be jumping out of the plane and taking on the responsibility of raising funds for the skydive. Harry Thompson our Digital Marketing Executive won the raffle and started planning events and activities to raise money for SPRING.

The fund-raising journey started with a bake sale where our star bakers managed to raise £81 and got us well on our journey to reaching our £600 target. The second activity organised was a pool tournament where 32 members of staff competed. This was a fantastic competition that brought all areas of Parvalux together. We were able to raise £70 from the tournament and the winner Jamie Manns kindly donated his winnings of £30 to SPRING. The next fundraising activity was a raffle, Harry contacted local businesses to round up attractive prizes that would encourage the Parvalux staff to buy tickets. Things like extra holiday, vouchers and gym passes were up for grabs and caught the attention of staff. We ended up selling over 500 tickets and absolutely smashing the fund-raising target. All together Harry managed to raise £1,053 for SPRING and his skydive was a day before his 25th birthday on October the 5th.

Understanding Torque and Speed in Electric Motors

Understanding Torque and Speed in Electric Motors

When selecting an electric motor for an application, regardless of project size or industry, two of the most critical performance factors to consider are torque and speed. These elements determine how well the motor can perform specific tasks, such as lifting heavy loads, running at high speeds, or providing precise control in an industrial setting.

The Importance of Torque

In essence torque is a measure of the rotational force produced by an electric motor and therefore the force available to rotate an object, such as a conveyor belt, fan, or machinery components.

The higher the torque, the greater the ability to rotate heavy objects, overcome tough resistance or to transport objects vertically. Applications which rely on high torque can include hoists and cranes, as well as industrial mixing machines.

The Need for Speed

The speed refers to how fast the motor’s output shaft rotates. High-speed motors rotate faster and are ideal for applications where rapid movement or high rotational velocity is required.

High speed motors can often be found in HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) systems or conveyor systems within the manufacturing industry which requires fast-paced activity.
